Preparing for Liftoff: Four Tips to Help You Maximize Your Workout

Ready to move my body

Most of us have hectic daily routines – work, home, family, school, etc. We have to make time to stay fit. For a lot of people, visiting the gym represents a valuable investment of time. At Top Tyr Training, we want to help you get the most out of that investment.

How we prepare for a workout can greatly impact performance and progression.  It doesn’t matter where you are on your fitness journey – just starting or a seasoned pro – proper preparation minimizes the risks of injury, maximizes results, and keeps you focused. In this post, our team of Torrance personal trainers is going to share some tips to help you prepare for your workout.

Know Where You’re Going

To get the most out of your workout, you need to know what you’re working for. What are your objectives? Building strength? Recovering from an injury? Getting into competitive condition? Knowing your objectives provides direction and motivation. If you need help, a personal trainer can provide specific recommendations to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration helps minimize the effects of heat stress, lubricates the joints, supports brain function, assists in the transport of oxygen and nutrients, and more.

Drink plenty of water during the day, especially if you plan on visiting the gym. For the best results, drink a healthy amount of water about 30 minutes before you start your workout. It’s also important to stay hydrated during your workout. You need to replace the moisture that you lose when you sweat. Part of your preparations should be packing a bottle of water into your gym bag.

Eat Healthy

Heading to the gym on an empty stomach isn’t a good idea. Neither is working out after a big meal. The key is to eat “right”. Try to eat a healthy balanced meal a few hours before you come into the gym. If it’s early evening and you haven’t had anything to eat since lunch, try a light, healthy snack a half hour before your workout. Bananas, oatmeal, whole grain bread, and other foods rich in carbohydrates make an excellent choice for your pre-workout snack.

The Warm Up

Warming up is vital to preparing your body for the physical exertion of your workout. Warm-up exercises include stretching, cardio exercises like jumping jacks, and short jogs. These activities help increase blood flow to your muscles, reduce the risk of injury to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, increase energy, and enhance flexibility.
